Subject: This is a big FUCK YOU to Hot Topic
Mood: aggravated

I am semi in anger with Hot Topic right now. Dont get me wrong, every so often I'll poke my head in there to peruse the available shirts because, every so often, I find one that has some wonderous video game refernce which makes my inner geek just shine like a glow bug on a warm Mid-July evening.

Yesterday while I was waiting for Winnie to finish her meeting with the Presidential Scholars, I went to Stonestown to kill some time. While there I ran into this really kick ass Joker shirt that I ...well..had to have. I picked up an Xtra Large and laughed at how small it was. So, after laughing at the ever so tiny shirt, I picked up a 2xx and let that be that. Fast forward to this morning.

Today, at 5:10 in the morning, I was in a sleepy haze and reached for the small, black Hot Topic bag which contained my new prize. I slipped it over my head and was pleased to note that it fit my shoulders well.....but that was about all it fit. I pulled it down farther and it covered the rest of my body...but not well. It was short (probably because of my rounded physique) and if I had elevated my arm to full frontal extension, the shirt would have lifted up...showing of my sexy tummy. EWWWW.

It was at that point that I remembered the people which Hot Topic caters to: short, waif-like emo kids who sit in their rooms and waste away in the dark, wanting to cut their wrists with an Atreyu cd which the cracked in half in a blind, crying rage.

So, after much reflection Ive decided to post this message:

World’s most sensitive scales weigh a zeptogram

* 14:45 30 March 2005
* NewScientist.com news service
* Celeste Biever

The world’s most sensitive scales can now detect a cluster of xenon atoms a billion, trillion times lighter than a gram. A zeptogram (10-21)g) is roughly the mass of a single protein molecule and its detection has set a new record.

The feat opens up the prospect of future devices that could identify single molecules by weight, providing a sensor of extreme sensitivity that would be valuable in medical and environmental testing.

The key to the scales is a small blade that vibrates in a magnetic field, generating a voltage in an attached wire. When atoms or molecules are placed on its surface, they weigh it down, lower the vibration frequency and change the voltage.

In 2000, Michael Roukes and his colleagues at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, US, used a blade of silicon 10,000 nanometers long and 260 nanometres thick to weigh cluster of gold atoms with a mass of one attogram (10-18g).

But the Caltech team has now modified the device to make the scales a thousand times more precise. Making the vibrating blade from silicon carbide not silicon makes it stiffer and smaller - just 1000 nm long. It also increases its resonant frequency from 33 Megaherz to 190 MHz. That allows the detection of smaller masses placed on the blade. Roukes also improved the precision of the amplifiers and transducers that measure the voltage.
Yoctograms next

“I think it’s a fairly big step,” says Kamil Ekinci now at Boston University in Massachusetts, who was Roukes’ student when he did the attogram work. “It’s the first time we can think about having devices that weigh single molecules.”

But to identify proteins by weight, the scales will have to become another 1000 times more precise, capable of weighing yoctograms (10-24)g), or individual hydrogen atoms.

If this can be achieved, such devices could be used to diagnose diseases very early by detecting single marker molecules found in a drop of blood, or to analyse the inner workings and signalling patterns of a single cell.

Current protein chips and mass spectrometers are much less sensitive “so you get a mish-mash of information as you have to average across large groups of cells,” he says.
Antibody coat

There are other obstacles to overcome in the quest to weigh single molecules, says Harold Craighead at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, whose group has also weighed attogram masses using vibrating strips

“There’s a difference between xenon and gold and dealing with physiologically derived materials,” he says. Roukes keeps his strip in a partial vacuum to stop contamination by air. Atoms are added by spraying in a gas of xenon atoms or nitrogen molecules, which condense on the strip.

But Craighead points out that a biological molecule would most likely be in solution, probably blood, and would need to be separated out before it could be sprayed.

An alternative approach, used by Craighead, is to coat the blade with antibodies that grab a specific correct protein from out of solution. Another advantage of this is that the exact weight does not need to be measured – because the antibody is specific, any change in frequency shows the protein is present.

1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video:
The Chowy seems to be the one contributing mostly to our video selection.......on DVD, I own about 5 movies.....I suck.

2) The last film I bought:
As previously stated, I dont buy many movies atm...but I know that one of the last was Char's Counterattack but that was a while ago. ( I could very well be wrong with this one, but we'll see...)

3) The last film I watched:
I saw Unleashed last night. Very very very good movie...and it proves that Jet Li CAN act! Next stop for Mr. Li is a lead role in a romantic comedy about a forlorn Shaolin Monk who falls for a small town DMV instructor called: Three Point Turn Technique

4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:

Hmm....5 movies huh? Sounds fair....

- The Last Samurai : Ok , I was blown away by this movie and still have troubles getting to the ending without crying. Ive finally come to terms with the way they did the ending...but that chain gun at the end just starts the waterworks up.

- Scarface: I was kicked out of the room abou 234567890x times as a child.....and when I saw it for the first time as a teenager, I understood why. Amazing movie with intense/ bloody scenes and just so chock full of male testosterone and insanity that it's hard not to love this movie.

- Batman/Batman Returns : Im not going to split these two up, as they both rank in the 'OMG LOVE' category....They both involve Michael Keaton as Batman..'nuf said.

- Romeo and Juliet (DiCaprio) : I WILL ADMIT TO LOVING THIS DAMN MOVIE! I love the play and I was very happy with the outcome of meshing the lines with modern times....GO AWAY!

Subject: The Borowitz Report

As previously stated, my boss is a total, politics driven, conservative crazy nut job (but hes really nice) and gets this email every day from this site The Borowitz Report. Basically, the site takes pertenant political/social subjects and makes fun of them...and he finds them hilarious.....then decides to share them with us. We do not find them quite as funny as he does.

Today, however, he gave us one that had me laughing....hard. Maybe because Im a loser...maybe because Im a geek...but whatever it was, it was good:

New Data Confounds Conventional Wisdom

As the countdown continues to the release of “Star Wars Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith,” a new study indicates that contrary to the conventional wisdom, a small but significant number of “Star Wars” fans may actually have sex.

Dr. Davis Preedon, who supervised the study for the University of Minnesota, said that while sexually active “Star Wars” fans still represent a tiny minority of the fan base, the fact that any “Star Wars” fans at all have sex may force scientists to reevaluate their theories about this little-understood population.

“The prevailing profile of the ‘Star Wars’ fan as a geek who spends ten hours a day on the Internet trying to dig up details of the new film’s plotline is only one piece of the puzzle,” he said. “For every one thousand ‘Star Wars’ fans who meet that description, there is another one who has a girlfriend.”

Shane Losby, 27, a sexually active “Star Wars” fan from Gary, Indiana, says he has tried for years to convince people that he has sex but “it’s really tough to get them to look past the whole ‘Star Wars’ thing.”

Dr. Preedon said his next research project is to test the conventional wisdom that “Star Trek” fans do not have sex: “We’ve just started the preliminary research, but so far that theory seems to be holding up.”

Well I had already ordered a stick of 512 pc 2700 so that is currently in there. Also, I ordered an Nvida 6600 GT .....ya..I went a little crazy..but its all worth it for a sleek ass compy....

Maniac killer

You are a maniac

It doesn't matter who they are and what they
have or haven't done. You still want to kill
them. And for a simple reason only; it's fun.
Seeing people in pain is like ecstasy. Maybe
you have some sort of mental problems or you
are this way because of previous deep scars,
only you know. But now you are sadistic and
maybe you only like to see a special group of
people be in pain (e.g. preps). However you are
not the most social person in the bunch and
people think you are weird. That bothers you
somewhat but atleast you can entertain yourself
with daydreaming about killing them. After all,
they have no idea what's coming.

Im still a bit foggy from the lack of sleep Ive been getting recently due to the hacky , phlegm-y ways of being sick but last night was the first night in a week that I slept the entire night through. Fucking Love.

I got some meds from the doctor yesterday , antibiotics (Avelox) and SUPER TUSSIN (aka Robitussin with Codeine). The 'tussin didnt make me me sleepy like I was expecting, which is good because it let me study some more last night (boo on two midterms this week) and try to do some manipulation of the AH...though that isnt going as well as I would like. So hopefully, the rest of the week will be kosher and less funky than last week.

On a side note, I glanced at the morning paper and saw , on the front page, that a judge has struck down California's ban on Gay/Lesbian marriage. S'bout fucking time.....though I wonder how long until some moronic group comes out from their cave and begins to protest and brings things right back to where they were.....gotta love yo-yo laws...illegal, legal, illegal, legal! I say itgoes back and forth a few more times just so people can bitch about it more..then we can finally settle on legal and move on as a society...jesus.

Well....one of the many. I still need to find Koji Kondo, Michiru Yamana and Hitoshi Sakimoto....but I have one down: Nobuo Uematsu.

While I am horribly biased when I say that I consider him one of the greatest videogame composers of all time (with the above listed 3 in hot pursuit), I deeply and truly mean it (and would have his babies if i could ^_^).

I wanted to post this entry two days ago, but I was super sick the past two days (just starting to finally get over it) and now, two days later, I think that the initial rush of 'OMGWTFBBQLOLLERSKATES!' has passed and I am finally able to post something beyond Ned Flanders-esque babbling.

My loving girlfriend, Chowy, found 2 months ago that 'Dear Friends' was doing a concert tour and would be coming to a venue near me....seeing as the date was 3-7 and my bday is 3-16, it all fit perfectly and she proceeded to procure some tickets to give the Davey a night that he will not soon forget. After some time of waiting, I got sick the day before the concert (Sunday). FUCK IF I WAS GOING TO LET SOME FUNKY COLORED GOO STOP ME FROM SEEING GOD! I left work early on Monday, skipped school, slept in my car, and drank Magic Tea (Gum Mo Cha?) at the house of Chow. Throwing on some spiffy clothes (which fit much more snugly than I remember....;_;) we left her house to head over to the Masonic Center for early parking.

When we were walking in, we ran into one of my friends from a previous Japanese class, Troy. I knew he was going to be there. He didnt tell me, but I knew it dammit. So we head on up the elevator and proceed to chitter chat about how excited we are when we saw Winnie's friend Sky. He plays WoW....so to Sky we went. ^_^ 2 glasses of wine later, we all shuffle into the main room in preparation to have our socks knocked the fuck off. We sat, we mingled, we ran into Renee, Taylor, Reg and one of the twins....more people who I had not thought were going to be there. We all looked SPIFFY! ....well.....most of us. see: monkey_junkey for more info on the idiots who attended.

To make a long story short, David had drool falling from his mouth from the get go. From the opening notes of "Liberi Fatali" to the 'added' song "One-Winged Angel", Davey drooled, cryed, squealed like a piglet, covered his gf in kisses...you name it, it was done. Then, between the ending theme "Final Fantasy" and the added finale, Uematsu walked up to the front of the stage to address everyone (with interpreter of course) and I was able to understand some of what he said. Not because he used big words, or elaborate grammatical structures, but because the man fucking talks like that guy from the Micro Machines commericials...I have NEVER EVER EVER heard someone speak Japanese that fast ANYWHERE.....it scared me much. He seemed like such a nice guy though, very smiley, very jokey, VERY SHORT ^_^.

All in all, it was a great fucking time...and I cant wait for any future performances. Ill be dragging the Chow to each and every one. ^_^

MEME FOR FUN!Collapse )

Take the quiz at dicepool.com

There's two ways to end up with this result. Either you picked the silliest possible answer to each question, or you answered honestly, and happen to be hyperactive, manic, loon. Assuming you answered honestly, your profile is as follows: You are the 100-sided dice, also known as the legendary Zocchihedron. You are the bit of data that registers so far off the chart that the average person doesn't even know you exist. You are desperate for attention and will get it any way you can. Your jokes have the lowest laugh ratio, but you go for quantity, not quality. Once you get started on a pointless tangent, it takes a group effort to bring you back to reality and make you shut up. You are a distraction who is permanently distracted. You consider yourself silly and entertaining, but everyone else complains about how lame and annoying you are. The one secret they aren't telling you, is how they sometimes actually miss the noise when you're gone.

Sadly...I did answer normally...;-;
